Where Does Your Rubbish Actually Go? Our Recycling Process Explained
At WeMovers, we're proud to say that 90% of everything we collect is diverted from landfill. But what does that actually mean, and how do we achieve it? Let's take you behind the scenes of our comprehensive recycling process and show you where your unwanted items really go.
Our Three-Stream Approach
When we collect items from your property, everything goes through our sorting process. We separate items into three main categories: recyclable materials, reusable items for donation, and waste requiring responsible disposal.
Stream 1: Recycling (70% of Items)
The majority of what we collect can be recycled. This includes:
Metal Items
Anything metal – from old bed frames to kitchen appliances – goes to specialized metal recycling facilities. These facilities separate ferrous and non-ferrous metals, melt them down, and create new products. Did you know that recycling steel saves 74% of the energy needed to produce it from raw materials?
Wood and Furniture
Wooden furniture, pallets, and timber are sent to wood recycling centers where they're processed into chipboard, animal bedding, or biomass fuel. Even treated wood can often be recycled with the right facilities.
Electronics and Appliances
We're registered WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) carriers. All electronics go to approved facilities where hazardous materials are safely removed and valuable components like copper, gold, and silver are recovered.
Garden Waste
Green waste is composted at dedicated facilities, turning into nutrient-rich soil improver used in landscaping and agriculture. Nothing goes to waste!
Stream 2: Donations (20% of Items)
A significant portion of what we collect is in perfectly usable condition. We work with several local and national charities to ensure these items find new homes:
Furniture
Good-quality sofas, beds, tables, and chairs go to furniture reuse charities. These organizations refurbish items if needed and sell or donate them to families in need, people setting up new homes, or those on low incomes.
Clothing and Textiles
Wearable clothing goes to charity shops or textile recycling facilities where it's sorted for reuse or recycled into new fabrics, insulation, or industrial cloths.
Books, Toys, and Household Items
These items are donated to charity shops, schools, community centers, and organizations supporting families. One person's unwanted item is often exactly what someone else needs.
Stream 3: Responsible Disposal (10% of Items)
A small percentage of items cannot be recycled or donated. These include heavily damaged furniture, contaminated materials, or items that pose health and safety risks. These go to licensed waste facilities where they're disposed of according to environmental regulations. We hold all necessary waste carrier licenses and provide full documentation for compliance.
Our Sorting Process
Here's what happens after we collect from your property:
- Collection: Items are loaded carefully into our vehicles
- Initial Sort: Our team does a preliminary sort during loading
- Facility Processing: Items arrive at our sorting facility
- Detailed Categorization: Each item is assessed for recycling, donation, or disposal
- Distribution: Items are sent to appropriate facilities or charities
- Documentation: All transfers are logged for compliance and transparency
Why This Matters
The UK sends millions of tonnes of household waste to landfill each year, where it takes decades or even centuries to decompose, releasing harmful greenhouse gases in the process. By diverting 90% of our collections from landfill, we're helping reduce environmental impact while supporting local communities through donations.
Our Partnerships
We've built strong relationships with:
- Licensed recycling facilities for all material types
- Local furniture reuse charities
- National charity organizations
- WEEE-approved electronics recyclers
- Authorized waste disposal sites
Transparency and Compliance
We're fully licensed waste carriers and provide waste transfer notes upon request. This documentation proves that your waste has been handled legally and responsibly – important for both residential and commercial customers.
