Prepare office furniture for removal

Desks, chairs and storage need a clear item list before they leave the office. Check ownership, condition, joined parts and the way out so the removal covers the furniture you mean.

Short answer

Count the furniture by type and position, then mark retained, leased or fixed pieces. Identify dismantling and upholstered seating separately. Resolve any files or equipment inside cabinets before handover; a furniture removal quote does not automatically include those contents or specialist work.

List what is going, including separate parts.

A row of workstations may include desk tops, pedestals, screens and connecting pieces. A boardroom set includes both the table and chairs. Name those parts so the collection description matches what you actually want removed.

Keep loose contents separate from the furniture list. Say if cabinets contain files or stock, and whether the contents are staying. If the office is too large to count easily, begin with approximate quantities by area.

Check ownership and whether reuse is realistic.

Before listing furniture, check whether it is leased, supplied by the landlord or promised to another team. For usable pieces, consider internal reuse or a recipient who has agreed to take them. Share honest condition details rather than describing every item as recyclable.

Damaged upholstery, incomplete sets and missing fixings can affect available options. Keep any existing labels visible if they are easy to see; do not move heavy furniture to find them.

Show the furniture in its current position.

For each awkward piece, note what makes it difficult: a long meeting table, joined desks, wall-fixed cupboards or a cabinet too wide for the doorway. A photo of its position and an approximate size can help establish what dismantling or handling needs agreeing.

Leave unstable or heavy furniture in place for assessment. Building-wide loading bookings and permitted work times belong in the office handover plan; add any item-specific restriction here.

Ask what the furniture quote includes.

Check the quoted list against the actual furniture: quantities, separate parts, condition and any agreed dismantling. Record files, stock and equipment as separate contents rather than assuming a cabinet price includes everything inside it. Fixed installations and repairs are separate work.

If you want paid removal, confirm the furniture and handling included in the total. Additions or a change of condition need the scope checking again before collection.

Do not treat every chair as the same waste.

Some upholstered office seating may contain POPs, pollutants requiring controlled handling and destruction rather than ordinary recycling. The rules distinguish domestic-type seating from other commercial seating; do not assume every chair has the same classification.

Name upholstered items in your request. WeMovers does not promise a blanket recycling rate or that every item will be reused.

Agree the working window and check the result.

Before collection, label retained furniture and resolve the contents of cupboards. Have an authorised contact check the item list as pieces leave. Keep corridors and fire exits clear; do not move furniture into them to prepare.

With WeMovers, payment is due on completion and a waste transfer note is provided. If your organisation needs evidence of a particular destination or recycling outcome, agree what is available before booking; the transfer note alone does not demonstrate that outcome.

Your next steps

  • Count desks, chairs and storage by room or floor.
  • Identify furniture that belongs to someone else or must stay.
  • Describe large, fixed or linked pieces before moving them.
  • Raise reuse and record requirements before agreeing collection.

List desks, chairs and storage by area, including separate parts and anything that must stay. Explain access and any dismantling needed.

Common questions

Can computers and loose office contents go too?

Add them to the same request, but identify data-bearing devices and confidential papers separately. Their handling is not automatically included with furniture.

Do I need an exact inventory?

No. Rough counts by room or floor can start the discussion. Make clear which quantities are estimates and ask if a visit would help.

Is a recycling certificate included?

Do not assume one is. Every WeMovers collection receives a waste transfer note; agree any additional evidence and whether it is available before booking.
