Compare five ways to get rid of a sofa
- Charity donation
For a usable sofa that a charity accepts.
Check: Condition, fire labels and postcode coverage.
- Council bulky collection
For eligible seating you can present at the required collection point.
Check: Local allowance or charge, item count and safe carrying.
- Retailer removal
When replacing your sofa and the retailer offers removal.
Check: Separate booking, full charge, collection point and date.
- Recycling-centre drop-off
If you have safe transport and lifting help.
Check: Site, address, vehicle and seating acceptance.
- Paid collection
When you need carrying help or other items collected together.
Check: Accepted contents, access, extra work and the complete quote.
Can you get a sofa collected for free?
Possibly: donation and some council allowances can be free, but they have different conditions. A charity needs furniture it can use or sell; a council collection is a waste service with its own item limits and collection point.
BHF offers free collection of accepted donations. Check its postcode form and condition rules: upholstered seating needs attached fire labels and must be saleable. Explain damage or missing parts before arranging a date. If donation is unsuitable, use one of the disposal options below.

How much does the council charge to remove a sofa?
Use your home postcode to find the correct council’s bulky-item service. Check how it counts a suite or corner sofa, whether you have an unused free allowance, and where you must put the items.
For Manchester City Council residents, the published offer checked on 12 October 2026 is one free collection of up to three items in a 365-day period. After that allowance, its charge is £32 for up to three items or £64 for up to six. These are council charges, not WeMovers prices, and they do not apply across every Greater Manchester borough.
Manchester requires the agreed roadside position and does not collect from inside the home. If you cannot safely meet your council’s collection-point rules, check another option before booking.
Useful next steps
Will the shop remove your old sofa?
Ask when ordering the replacement: is old-sofa removal offered, what does the complete service cost, and will it take the sofa from its current room? Confirm the dates separately rather than assuming collection happens with delivery.
Furniture Village and ScS customers can arrange old-sofa removal separately. Confirm what has actually been booked for your order, including the full charge, carrying from the room and collection date. You can also arrange an independent collection if that suits your plans better.
Could you take it to a recycling centre?
A self-drop-off route may suit if you already have safe transport and lifting help. Check that the centre accepts the seating, serves your address and allows your vehicle before loading it. A free site visit can still leave you with transport costs.
Use the R4GM finder for its participating boroughs; Wigan runs separate centres. Elsewhere, check your council’s household recycling centre rules. Do not cut the sofa apart to fit it into a car.
Useful next steps
Why an old sofa cannot always be recycled
Some upholstered seating contains persistent organic pollutants, or POPs. Waste seating containing them needs specialist treatment, so neither donation nor recycling can be promised for every sofa. Keep the upholstery intact.
Tell the chosen collector about exposed springs, tears, damp or suspected infestation. They need to agree suitable handling before the collection, whichever route you choose.
Check the way out once you have chosen a route
Give the type of seating, including any pull-out bed, recliner or separate corner sections. Explain stairs, narrow doors and tight turns. A whole-sofa photo can help; you do not need to attempt a test lift.
For WeMovers’ indoor sofa service, normal detachable feet or backs and normal modular sections can be dealt with during removal. More involved dismantling needs agreement. Check accessible pockets for belongings, mark anything staying and clear small obstacles where safe.
When paid collection is the better fit
Paid help may suit if the sofa is unsuitable for donation, you need it carried from indoors, or other unwanted pieces are going too. Compare the full collection scope, not a single-item headline: seating, access and agreed extra work all matter.
WeMovers offers paid sofa collection. Use the sofa quote for sofas and armchairs, or furniture removal for a wider collection that includes other furniture. We show a price online where possible; if the collection needs checking, our team confirms the price before you book.

There is no fire label. Can the sofa still be removed?
A missing label can rule out a charity donation, but it is not the same question as waste collection. Declare the label and condition, then agree an accepting disposal route. Do not assume it can be resold or donated.
Is free sofa removal available near me?
Use the BHF postcode check above for eligible donations and your council’s bulky-item lookup for local allowances. Free availability depends on acceptance, address and collection conditions. WeMovers is a paid collection service.
Do Furniture Village and ScS remove old sofas?
Both offer ways to arrange old-sofa removal separately from a new-sofa purchase. Check whether removal is booked for your order, what the total charge covers and when collection will happen. New-sofa delivery alone does not confirm old-sofa removal; you can also arrange your own collection.
