Clearance advice

How to clear your garage without emptying everything

Short answer

Start with a view from the doorway and a rough list of the larger contents. Identify retained tools, bikes and shelving, and flag paint, chemicals or unknown containers separately. Clearing contents does not automatically include removing the garage or its fixed fittings.

Start with the space you want back

Decide whether you need room for the car, a clear workbench or simply access to stored belongings. Mark the part to clear and list what stays. A garage clearance can cover selected contents; keeping shelving or a working lawnmower does not mean you must sort everything around it first.

Check whether the contents belong to anyone else. Put borrowed tools and boxes awaiting a family decision outside the removal instructions, even if they look unused.

Describe what is there, including what is hidden

An overview from a safe doorway position can show furniture, stacked boxes and the available route. Add a second view only if it is safely accessible. Do not climb on storage or shift unstable stacks for a better photograph.

Name large items and describe the rest in ordinary terms: ‘a chest freezer, a dismantled bed and boxes along the back wall’. Mention a pile behind the furniture if it cannot be seen. Photos help explain volume but cannot establish weight or identify unknown substances.

Keep unusual materials out of the ordinary pile

Paint, oils, garden chemicals, batteries and unidentified containers need separate assessment. State what the label says if it is already visible; ‘unknown’ is a useful answer. Do not open, decant or mix contents to identify them, and tell us about leaks or damage before a collection is agreed.

If you suspect asbestos in panels, roofing or stored pieces, leave it undisturbed and seek specialist advice. HSE warns that identifying asbestos by appearance can be difficult. A photograph is not a clearance for ordinary handling.

Separate useful contents from disposal decisions

Working tools or sound storage may be worth keeping, selling or offering for reuse. Confirm a recipient before leaving those items out of the collection. A mixed clearance can still include the remaining furniture, boxes and other agreed contents.

For self-disposal, check the exact site and material first. Greater Manchester and Wigan publish separate local guidance; Wigan directs some hazardous materials to specific facilities. A site accepting household waste does not mean every substance or vehicle is accepted without conditions.

Describe the work you want included

Mention a jammed or narrow doorway, steps, a long driveway and where the vehicle could park. If access is only through the house, say so. The amount, heavy materials and carrying work can matter more than the garage’s floor area.

Be clear about freestanding contents versus fixed shelves, workbenches or structures. Dismantling, demolition and specialist materials are separate work to discuss, not a standard part of removing stored items. Ask which work and materials are included in the price.

Make the instructions easy to follow

For example: ‘Clear the bed frame, broken chair and bags on the left. Keep the bikes and rear shelving. The paint tins need checking separately.’ That instruction is clearer than ‘empty the garage’. Keep any undecided boxes out of the agreed scope.

On the day, confirm those boundaries before loading. Leave heavy lifting to the agreed collection team. With WeMovers, payment is due on completion. A waste transfer note can be provided; confirm any records you need when arranging collection.

Your next steps

  • Choose the area you want usable again.
  • Identify tools, bikes and storage that stay.
  • Describe furniture, boxes and heavy materials separately.
  • Flag unknown containers without opening them.
  • Explain the route between the garage and parking.

Describe the contents you want cleared, what needs to stay and the route to parking. Flag unusual materials so we can review them separately.

Common questions

Must I open every box first?

No. Say what you know, which boxes should remain and where contents are uncertain. Unknown substances or potentially hazardous items must be flagged rather than treated as ordinary rubbish.

Can the garage itself be removed?

A contents clearance does not include demolition. Describe any structure or fixed fitting separately so the work and any specialist requirements can be checked.

Will paint tins be accepted?

Do not assume so. Give the type, approximate amount and container condition where known. Acceptance and handling need confirming before they are included.
