Choose a disposal route before preparing the fridge
A working fridge may suit reuse if a recipient accepts it. For a failed or unwanted appliance, compare retailer take-back, council collection, a household recycling centre and paid removal help.
If you are replacing it, ask the retailer about take-back when ordering. Check its full home-collection charge, required preparation and fitted-appliance exclusions. Free in-store electrical take-back is not a promise of free collection.

Where can you dispose of a fridge for free?
An accepted donation or eligible council allowance can avoid a collection charge. Use a charity’s area check or the council lookup to establish that first; a working fridge or a low income does not by itself confirm free collection.
R4GM accepts household fridges and freezers at its recycling centres, which participating-borough residents can use free subject to site and vehicle rules. Wigan has separate centres. You still need safe transport: free drop-off does not mean someone will collect from the kitchen.
The council collection lookup covers England and Wales. For other UK locations, use the Scottish and Northern Irish routes below. Business waste and commercial refrigeration need separate arrangements, even if the item looks similar.
Useful next steps
Give the collector the appliance type
Say whether it is a tall fridge freezer, under-counter unit, chest freezer or American-style appliance. Identify a wine cooler or unusual size. Approximate dimensions and a safe photo are useful if it is particularly wide; a model number is not essential.
Include each separate appliance once and explain stairs, tight turns or a route that needed doors removing on the way in. Do not test the route by lifting it yourself.
Check what is attached to it
Mention fitted housing, a cabinet door or water supply for an ice or water dispenser. Disconnection and removal from fittings are not automatically part of an ordinary collection. Agree responsibility before the collection date.
Leave it in place while describing the job. Do not reach behind it, force fittings or disconnect unfamiliar plumbing for a photo. The appliance preparation guide explains how to separate disconnection from collection.
Useful next steps
Empty and defrost it using the right instructions
Plan alternative chilled or frozen storage before switching it off. Follow your model’s manual for safe disconnection and defrosting, allow time for thawing and contain meltwater. Beko’s general advice warns against sharp tools and forcing frozen drawers; your own manual takes priority.
Tell the collector if food remains inside or you cannot prepare it safely. Do not fill it with other rubbish: that waste needs to be described and accepted separately.
Why a fridge needs a specialist disposal route
Cooling appliances need treatment that deals with refrigerants before other materials can be recovered. Keep pipes and cooling components intact; do not cut them or release refrigerant.
Using a household recycling centre does not establish where a private collection will go. Ask the chosen collector about its intended route if reuse or recycling matters to your decision; neither outcome is guaranteed for every appliance.
If you need help carrying it out
WeMovers provides paid fridge and freezer collection, including requests with other unwanted items. The service page explains the details needed for a complete quote, rather than an appliance-only estimate.
State fitted position, condition and access before agreeing collection. This lets you compare the actual work with the retailer or council option you considered.

Can you dispose of a fridge at the tip?
Yes, where the household recycling centre accepts it and you meet its address and vehicle rules. R4GM’s fridge advice and centre finder are linked above; Wigan has a separate route. Check your local site before transporting it.
Is fridge freezer disposal free?
A qualifying drop-off or accepted donation may be free, and councils may have allowances. Check the specific route: transport, carrying from indoors or retailer home take-back can be charged. WeMovers is a paid service.
What if it stopped working with food inside?
Tell the chosen collector about the contents and condition before booking. Agree what needs emptying and who can do it safely; do not describe it as an empty, ready-to-collect appliance.
